Inspiration Beneath the Surface — A Visit to Mote Aquarium

Where does inspiration come from?
Sometimes it’s found in unexpected places — even beneath the surface of the sea.

Recently I visited the new Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, a place where the rhythm of the ocean quietly surrounds you. Standing beneath the enormous tanks, watching sharks glide effortlessly above while schools of fish drift through beams of blue light, it felt less like an exhibit and more like stepping inside another world.

What struck me most was the movement of light through water. Sun-like rays filtered down through the deep blue, breaking into shimmering patterns that danced across the bodies of the fish. The deeper the water appeared, the more dramatic the contrast became—bright flashes of reflected light against the calm darkness of the surrounding blue.

For an artist, moments like this are powerful reminders of how nature creates composition effortlessly. The curved motion of the sharks, the drifting schools of fish, and the quiet gradients of blue all felt like living brushstrokes across a massive canvas.

It also reinforced something I often explore in my work: contrast and movement. Just like the Gulf sunsets along Siesta Key, the underwater world is full of balance—light meeting shadow, stillness meeting motion, simplicity meeting complexity.

Experiences like this often make their way back into the studio. Not as literal depictions of fish or ocean scenes, but as energy, color, and flow within the painting itself.

Looking up through the water at these creatures gliding through beams of light, it was impossible not to feel a sense of calm and wonder. The ocean has a way of slowing everything down. It invites you to observe, to breathe, and to see the subtle beauty in color, texture, and movement.

Experiences like this often make their way back into the studio. Not as literal depictions of fish or ocean scenes, but as energy, color, and flow within the painting itself. The deep blues, shimmering highlights, and organic movement found beneath the water surface begin to influence the layers and textures of the work.

Sometimes inspiration doesn’t arrive in a dramatic moment.
Sometimes it quietly swims overhead.

And if you look closely enough, you might just find your next idea waiting beneath the surface.
